UST ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OFFICERS INDUCTED

The newly elected officers of the University of Santo Tomas Alumni Association were inducted into office on August 29, 2006 at a ceremony held at the UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy Multi-purpose Hall. The inducting officer was Rev. Fr. Juan V. Ponce, O.P., Acting Rector.

Inducted into office were: Laura Suarez Acuzar – President (College of Commerce), Judge Oscar Herrera- Vice President (Faculty of Civil Law), Dr. Evelyn Songco- Secreatry (College of Education), Dr. Benjie Reyes – Treasurer (College of Science), Dr. Mercedes Leuterio- Auditor (Graduate School), and Johnny Hubilla – Public Relations Officer (College of Fine Arts and Design). Also inducted into office were the members of the alumni association which is composed of the presidents of the college alumni groups, the president elect and the immediate past presidents. The Public and Alumni Affairs Office is the secretariat of the Alumni Association.

UST PHILETS ALUMNA WINS RAMON MAGSAYSAY AWARD

EUGENIA Duran-Apostol, an alumna of the former UST Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, was conferred the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature, Creative Communication Arts for 2006.  Together with fellow awardees from the Philippines, Cambodia, Korea, Nepal and India, she received the award on August 31, 2006 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.  The Ramon Magsaysay Foundation, the body behind the Asian Nobel, recognizes Apostol’s “courageous example in placing the truth-telling press at the center of the struggle for democratic rights and better government in the Philippines”.

Apostol founded the Philippine Daily Inquirer in 1985 where the broadsheet became an important vehicle in bringing up-to-date news and information on the true state of the country under the Marcos regime.  With her at the helm of the Inquirer, Apostol formed the newspaper’s reputation on integrity, truth, and fearlessness.  She stepped down as publisher of the Inquirer in 1994.

In her words of acceptance, Apostol said that the prize money was part of the award would be donated to the Foundation for Worldwide People for its Education Revolution program.  She established the foundation with friends in 1996.
